Biography/History

The Milwaukee Board of School Directors as established by law consists of nine members: one member elected at large, and eight members elected from numbered districts as determined by the Milwaukee Board of School Directors. The regular term of each member is four years and until their successors have been elected and qualified.

Legally, school boards are agents of the state, created by the legislature and selected by the electors of the local school district to represent and act for the state in providing the district with educational programs and facilities. The Milwaukee Board of School Directors is the policy making body for the school system, serving within the framework provided by law, the will of the local citizenry, and the ethics of the education profession.

Scope and Content Note

Collection contains minutes of meetings of the Board of School Directors, including reports. There is a subject index. The years 1959-1969 are missing. There is also a volume of audit of payments that is a monthly listing of audit results of payments for public school expenses. Lists names of persons not on payroll and/or not on time record from April 1884 to December 1889. Volume 2 duplicates in part Volume 1.

The Special Committee on Equality of Educational Opportunity was formed by the Milwaukee Board of School Directors in 1963 in order to address Milwaukee’s racial disparities by studying the needs of the schools in order to provide effective achievement results across racial lines, in accordance with the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution. These materials contain minutes of the meetings of the Committee, as well as correspondence, reports and memos relating to the committee, and other miscellaneous papers.
