Biography/History
George C. Butler unseated the 10th District’s incumbent Michael R. McGee in the 1992
Aldermanic election. Butler earned a degree in Police Science from Milwaukee Area
Technical College in 1974 and was previously a Milwaukee Police Department (MPD)
Recruiting Sargent on unpaid leave from MPD to become the 10th District Alderman. He
was a former Marine (1958-1961), in the Coast Guard Reserves (1967-1976) and Army
Reserves (1976-1980). In 2000, he was defeated in a very close race for reelection
by Rosa Cameron. He then returned to MPD and retired as a police officer. In 2002,
Butler unsuccessfully ran again after Cameron resigned as a result of her indictment
by a federal grand jury.

This collection contains records from the City of Milwaukee’s 10th District Alderman,
George C. Butler. The records date from within his Aldermanic tenure, 1992-2000. The
original subject headings from aldermanic staff have been kept intact as much as
possible. This collection includes reports, correspondence and newspaper clippings
on three main subjects: the Election Commission, the Health Department and the
Milwaukee water crisis / cryptosporidium outbreak. The crisis began in spring of
1993 when residents began getting sick and cryptosporidium was discovered in the
water supply.
