Biography/History

The City Plan Commission (CPC) is the City's official planning body and is responsible for master planning activities. It was established as the City Planning Commission by Wisconsin statute in 1909 and was known as the Board of Public Land Commissioners from 1939 to 1960 before receiving its present name in 1961. The seven members of the City Plan Commission are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Common Council to serve three-year terms. Operating within the Department of City Development, the CPC advises the Common Council on a variety of land development issues including zoning map changes, revisions in the zoning ordinance, subdivision approvals, business improvement districts, street and alley closures, public land disposition and acquisition, new streets and the approval of development plans in certain overlay districts.

Scope and Content Note

The bulk of the collection is comprised of the volumes of a Works Progress Administration (WPA) 1939-1940 real property survey by block of all public properties in and around the City of Milwaukee. The Board of Public Land Commissioners and the Milwaukee County Regional Planning Department sponsored project No. 9437. Information provided includes statistical data such as: number of structures by type of structure, by year built, by condition, etc. and dwelling unit data such as number of units by condition, by duration of occupancy, by number of persons per room, by number of children 14 years or less, etc.

The collection also contains a Quarter Section Atlas of the City of Milwaukee as well as various reports and publications. There are also files of correspondence with various City departments and committees, typically planning documents for different projects, including expressways, buildings and zoning, parks, and traffic.

Arrangement of the Materials

The collection is generally arranged alphabetically.
