Biography/History
The purpose of the Public Debt Commission is “to superintend the sale and issuance of
municipal debt, and to administer the Public Debt Amortization Fund.” The Commission
was created by the 1874 Laws of Wisconsin – Ch. 174, an act to “revise, consolidate
and amend the Charter of Milwaukee.” The Charter chapter was originally numbered Ch.
11; it is now numbered Ch. 15.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains journals with summary entries listing name, amount and a
brief description; they are chronologically arranged. Also included are some annual
reports, various City bonds that were created under Mayor Daniel Hoan’s
administration, and a publication relating to Milwaukee’s debt.
