Larraine McNamara-McGraw earned a B.A. from Marquette University in 1971 with a major in History & Theology and a minor in Philosophy. She worked for Milwaukee East Organizations Congress, Inc. from 1974-1976. She went on to earn her J.D. from Marquette University Law School, graduating in 1982. She worked as a public defender for the State of Wisconsin from 1982-1989. In May of 1989 she was elected Alderwoman for Milwaukee’s District 3. She continued to be re-elected until 1996. In 1997 she began her own law practice. In 2021 she joined Horizon Law Group, LLC.

This collection contains records from the City of Milwaukee’s 3rd District Alderwoman, Larraine McNamara-McGraw. The bulk of the records date from her Aldermanic tenure, 1989-1996, although some have been retained from her predecessor, Sandra Hoeh-Lyon. Original subject headings existed on folders and have been kept intact as much as possible. This collection includes reports, statistics, publications, correspondence, handwritten notes, drafts of ordinances, newspaper clippings and articles. Some of the largest subjects include research and public reaction to renovation/construction proposals by Columbia Hospital and Marquette University’s Avenue Commons project, documents on Milwaukee’s 1990 redistricting, and discussions regarding fellow Alderman Michael McGee. There are also numerous folders related to guns, a local gun club and gun laws/legislation.

Folders are arranged alphabetically by subject and then chronologically within each folder.
