Biography/History

Cynthia Kukor served as the City of Milwaukee 11th District Alderwoman from 1972 to 1979. She was born in Camden, New Jersey on 11 April 1941. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Santa Barbara Junior College, the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, where she earned a Bachelor’s of Photography, and Antonelli’s School of Photography-Lithography in Philadelphia. She became a Milwaukee resident in 1961 and married David Kukor in Camden, New Jersey in 1962. They had three boys, but were divorced in 1974. She was a leader in the opposition movement to the South Stadium Freeway. She married William Broydrick, a Democratic State Representative from Milwaukee in January 1979.

Kukor’s civic activities included membership in the 11th Ward Democratic Party Unit, treasurer for the Coalition for Action on Shared Taxes, former director of the State Action Committee of the League of Women Voters, National Municipal League, and the 4th District Women’s Political Caucus. Kukor was elected alderwoman on her first attempt for public office in 1972 when she defeated Alderman Harold Jankowski. She was the third woman elected to serve on the Common Council and the only woman on the council during most of her time in office.

While in office she served on various committees, such as Chairman of the Milwaukee U.S. Bicentennial Committee, Chairman of the Special Committee on Rent Withholding, Vice-chairman of the Common Council’s Public Improvements Committee, and Vice-chairman of the Taxation and Finance Committee. Kukor resigned her position in May 1979 after her marriage to Broydrick to relocate to his district. Her final day in office was 12 June 1979. Ms. Kukor went to work for Datashield, Inc., and then started her own advertising and public relations firm. As of 2008, Kukor is a partner of Broydrick & Associates, a lobbying agency located in Madison, Wisconsin.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains records from the City of Milwaukee’s 11th District Alderwoman, Cynthia M. Kukor. The bulk of the records date from her Aldermanic tenure, 1972-1979, although some have been retained from her predecessor, Harold Jankowski. The collection contains reports, service requests, and correspondence from city departments and committees like the Bicentennial Commission and Department of Public Works that deal with housing and rental issues, the Milwaukee Exposition and Convention Center and Arena (MECCA), possible implementation of cable television, and a lottery to help pay for education. The collection also contains a fair amount of correspondence with constituents regarding traffic and property concerns, emergency medical services, grocery unit pricing, protesting Jan’s Health Studio, along with other general correspondence. Alderwoman Kukor also helped conduct a City of Milwaukee equal employment survey, was involved in the League of Women Voters, and helped organized the Wide World of Women Conference.
