Scope and Contents

The collection is divided into three main parts: minutes from the club meetings, scrapbook, and a smaller photo album.

The minutes are from the meetings carried out from March 16, 1960 through June 13, 1978. These minutes include the general proceedings of the meetings as well as information concerning club activities and club members. Also found in the minutes are a list of charter members and a list of “Grandmothers of the Year” from 1960-1983. The minutes are arranged in chronological order.

The scrapbook from the Nokomis Grandmothers Club contains newspaper clippings, letters, membership lists, awards, and photographs. The newspaper clippings deal with club meetings and events. Some of the clippings deal with individual members and include things such as obituaries, anniversaries, and honors received by members. The letters in the scrapbook are mostly written responses from individuals or groups regarding inquiries from the club. The photographs are from club events and usually give the names of the people in the photographs and the dates they were taken. The scrapbook covers the years 1960-1984. It is arranged in chronological order, although there are some discrepancies.

The third part of the collection is a small photo album donated to the club by Olga M. Berg, herself a member and the 1983 “Grandmother of the Year.” The photographs are from the club’s 1979 Christmas party and the 1983 “Grandmother of the Year” award presentation. The photo album does not name the people in the photos.

Historical Note

The Nokomis Grandmothers Club was formed in March 1960, by a group of La Crosse area grandmothers who had mentally handicapped grandchildren. The main objectives of the club are to contribute to and assist in charities that deal mainly with children, create a home building fund for Wisconsin grandmothers, promote additional grandmothers clubs throughout the state, select and honor a “Grandmother of the Year” and honor grandmotherhood on the second Sunday in October. The club also sponsors special trips and activities for its members. The Nokomis Grandmothers Club is a chapter of the National Grandmothers Club.
