Scope and Contents

The collection consists mainly of eight scrapbooks covering 1959-1985, with a smattering of other information about the local chapter. The scrapbooks are arranged in chronological order and include meeting minutes, membership lists, newspaper articles, and photographs.

Other documents not included in the scrapbooks consist of an interesting folder containing biographical material and photographs of Arthur G. Mossong; correspondence from the Department of Wisconsin secretary regarding the annual state convention 1984-1989; handwritten notes that serve as meeting minutes 1984-1988; membership lists 1971-1989; and lastly three issues of the state WWI veterans newspaper from 1984-1986.

When the collection was donated to the Library in 1997, past president Alice Herr remembered there being a total of four boxes of records at one time, but could only locate two of the boxes.

The Veterans of World War I Auxiliary La Crosse Barracks 1650 was founded March 24, 1959, by 37 women and initially met in the Eagles Club rooms. Rosella Miller served as the first president. Other officer positions included secretary, treasurer, 1st and 2nd vice presidents, chaplain, guard, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trustees, conductress, and later, historian.
