Scope and Contents

The photographic archive of La Crosse architecture consists of one thousand color slides of two hundred architecturally significant structures, including residents, commercial buildings and churches, located in La Crosse. Additional documentation provided includes a master list of sites photographed arranged alphabetically by street name with numbered streets first, identification cards which describe each slide, and data research cards which describe the architectural significance of each site. Further information is available in the brief “Guide to Photographic Archive of La Crosse Architecture” prepared by project photographer Barbara Conway.

Documentation of the project itself is also provided, including the project proposal and budget.

Historical Note

Proposed initially in 1979 by the staff of the Area Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with support of key UW-L faculty, this photographic survey of La Crosse historical architecture was eventually funded by the city’s Commission on Historic Sites through the block grant program. Barbara “Babs” Conway of Barbara Associates was the freelance photographer hired to document the sites on 35mm slide film. It is unclear exactly when the project was begun, but it took nearly three years to complete.

The full original collection including notes by the author is housed at the Area Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The La Crosse Public Library received copies of the slides and data cards in 1985.
