Abstract:
Papers and photographs pertaining to the service and award of Jerome A. Sudut, a Wausau, Wisconsin, resident who was killed in action and awarded the Medal of Honor during the Korean War. The collection includes papers and photographs pertaining to his two enlistments in the Army, along with the posthumous awarding of the Medal of Honor for his actions in securing an enemy held hillside near Kumhwa, Korea. Manuscripts pertaining to Sudut's two enlistments in the Army include his discharge certificate from his first enlistment, training and promotion certificates, two military Christmas greetings sent to his parents, and a pencil drawing of Sudut done while he was stationed in Japan. Manuscripts pertaining to his death and awarding of the Medal of Honor feature the original telegrams informing his parents of his death, the transport of his body back to Wausau, and the awarding of the Medal of Honor; the original Medal of Honor citation and certificate signed by President Harry Truman, and information pertaining to the presentation ceremony. The collection also includes newspaper clippings about Sudut's death and Medal of Honor presentation, and personal papers prior to joining the Army. Photographs include images of Sudut in uniform, relaxing, undergoing jump training, and posing with fellow soldiers; various tourist images from Japan and several photographs of civilians; images of military bases; and photographs of fellow soldiers posing individually and in groups. Particularly interesting images include a photograph of Sudut jumping out of an airplane and rolling up his parachute after a jump, several photographs taken while he was serving as a motorcycle escort for President Truman, two copy prints of original images taken just before his death, and a photograph of his father, Joseph Sudut, being presented with his son's Medal of Honor.
