Abstract:
Papers of C. Jack (Charles Jackson) McLanahan, a public relations and education director in the cooperative movement, consisting of correspondence, minutes of meetings, reports, newsletters, news clippings, programs, planning documents, and financial materials. The papers primarily document McLanahan's activities as education director of the Cooperative League of the USA from 1942 to 1947, at which time he was also a director of the Rochdale Institute, and a key figure in the Council for Cooperative Development. McLanahan was a cooperative educator with the Evanston Consumer's Cooperative from 1935 to 1937, Midland Cooperative Wholesale from 1937 to 1942, and Eastern Michigan Cooperatives from 1948 to 1951. He was briefly involved with A. Philip Randolph, Victor Reuther, and others in the National Education Committee for a New Party from 1946 to 1947 in a failed attempt to create a new progressive political party, and in labor-cooperative cooperation. The collection also contains broad documentation of the larger cooperative movement during the 1930s and 1940s, with the coverage of education and public relations being especially strong. McLanahan's interest in the international scope of the cooperative movement is indicated through his correspondence arranging to bring Latin American exchange students to the United States for cooperative education, correspondence with Latin American and Canadian cooperative leaders, and by his activities as the cooperative movement's representative in the Youth Organization Representation Committee of the United States National Commission for UNESCO. In addition the collection includes brochures and promotional literature gathered during a 1937 tour of European cooperatives as well as a small number of photographs taken during that tour.
