James E. Albrecht Papers, 1915-1999

Scope and Content Note

Papers of a Washington County doctor. The majority of the collection documents Albrecht's activities to combat alcoholism, reform third-party medical care imposed by Medicare/Medicaid, bring about a National Day of Prayer, and obtain a conscientious objector deferment from fighting in World War II.

The collection includes newspaper clippings and correspondence describing these activities. Dr. Albrecht wrote several speeches and sermons related to his perspective on these issues, which are also included in the collection. Other materials, including a copy of his autobiography, describe Albrecht's interest in several Christian organizations. The collection also includes photographs of Albrecht's family and his time spent at a civilian public service camp in 1941-1942. Additional information in the collection relates to the artwork of Marian Albrecht, Dr. Albrecht's wife.
