Biography/History

Francis (Frank) Xavier Bufka Jr., was born to Grace and Francis Bufka of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1917. Bufka lived in Milwaukee until his enlistment in the Army in 1941. He then spent four years traveling to various forts around the country, training for his service. While in the military, he worked various jobs, before being assigned to a unit to go overseas. Bufka was sent to Japan in late 1945 to work at different air fields as a part of the Japan Air Material Area (JAMA) forces. While in Japan, Bufka worked various jobs for the military as well. A large part of his work focused on dealing with paperwork for soldiers to release them from their service to the Army. Bufka travelled around Japan to various cities, visiting Korea and the Philippines as well. After the war, Bufka returned to Milwaukee to live with his mother. While in Milwaukee, he began to work for the Post Office, first helping sort packages to be sent elsewhere, then working with letters. Bufka died in 2000 and is buried in Wood Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
