John E. Schein Papers, 1905-1949

Biography/History

Dr. John E. Schein was a physician and surgeon who practiced in Oshkosh, Wisconsin most of the first half of the twentieth century.

John E. Schein was born in Spring Prairie, Walworth County, Nov. 19, 1872. The family later moved to Oshkosh, where he attended elementary and high school. He worked for a time as a car accountant for the Wisconsin Central Railroad Company, and spent nine years as a train dispatcher and telegraph operator before entering Marquette University's medical school in 1900. In 1904 he received his M.D. and in that year also he married Laura Phillipson of Oshkosh. To them two sons were born, Norman C. and John E. Jr..
