Julius P. Heil Papers, 1928-1946

Scope and Content Note

The Julius P. Heil Papers cover almost exclusively his public activities for the years 1938-1942. When presented to the Wisconsin Historical Society, the correspondence was arranged alphabetically, with the letters “A” and “K” missing. In 1964 the collection was prepared for research and the correspondence was then placed in chronological order. This arrangement revealed the degree to which the correspondence pertained to the 1938, 1940, and 1942 campaigns. Much of this correspondence is of a routine character, and election congratulations and replies, invitation and requests, as well as political and administrative business predominate. There are several letters written by prominent figures, among them Frank Knox, Frances Perkins, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harold Stassen, Henry L. Stimson, Alexander Wiley, and Wendell L. Willkie.

The collection includes several files of gubernatorial and campaign speeches and radio remarks (as well as some delivered by members of Heil's staff), issue briefing books apparently used during the 1940 and 1942 campaigns, memorabilia, and legal materials pertaining to the succession of Lieutenant Governor Walter Goodland. In 1985 these files were combined with similar materials found in State Archives Series 1 and the public record series designation was withdrawn. On microfilm are fifteen biographical clipping scrapbooks, 1933-1942, (filmed without a counter), as well as a large volume of loose clippings mainly dating from 1942.

The photographs are news photos, ca. 1939-1944, showing Governor Heil's activities including visiting the Allis-Chalmers plant with President Franklin Roosevelt, promoting war bonds, with veterans' and military groups, speaking, signing bills, and promoting dairy products.
