Office of Cable Regulation Records, 1971-2000

Biography/History

The Office of Telecommunications, established in 1981, regulated cable television within the City. The next year, the City contracted with Warner Amex for a local cable franchise. It later became the Office of Cable Regulation, and was part of the Department of Administration. It administered the Warner agreement and operated the City cable television studio (Channel 26). It also had responsibilities regarding use of dedicated channels set up for purposes of community access and information, and for long range planning, expansion and improvement of cable and telecommunication services. Due to changes in state law, the City of Milwaukee no longer regulates cable television or video programming services. Customers who are having problems with their services now contact their cable providers.
