Part 1 (Wis Mss EQ): Original Collection, 1850-18670.8 c.f. (1 archives box and 1 flat box) In the collection of letters written to his wife in Whitewater, Captain Redington follows the movements of Company D, 28th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry from the time of their departure from Milwaukee to their establishment in Little Rock, Arkansas. He speaks from the point of view of an officer, describing and commenting on disciplinary measures, camp morale, hospitalization measures, marauding expeditions, slavery, plantation practices, roads, transportation, and movements of troops. He describes in some detail the abandoned Confederate fortifications at Columbus, Kentucky; a short expedition up the White River in Arkansas to Fort Charles and a longer one through the Yazoo Pass to the Tallahatchie River in Mississippi; the battle of Helena; and the march down into Arkansas. Filed with the letters is a copy of a newspaper account of the battle of Helena. Also present are volumes consisting of order and report books of the above company and a roll book of the Pioneer Company of the 1st Division of the 7th Army Corps, to which Redington was assigned as captain commanding at its formation in 1863. Some letters are typed copies (with corrected punctuation and spelling) of originals in the possession of Mrs. E.A. Le Clair.
