George B. Belting Papers, 1952-1970

Biography/History

Conservative Republican assemblyman George B. Belting was born in DeSoto, Wisconsin, on July 15, 1914. After graduating from Janesville High School, he attended the University of Wisconsin where he was active in student politics. He graduated with a degree in economics in 1936. Two years later he completed his law degree at the same institution.

During World War II Belting served in the Navy in the Pacific. After the cessation of hostilities he worked as a legal officer, returning to Wisconsin in 1946 to establish a law practice in Beloit. In addition to his legal work Belting was active in many civic organizations including the Beloit Historical Society, the American Legion, Izaak Walton League, Taxpayers League, Boy Scouts of America, and the Better Business Bureau. He began his political career by serving three terms on the Rock County Board. In 1956 he won his first term in the Assembly from the county's Third District. He then served continuously until his defeat in 1970. His committee assignments included vice-chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee and memberships on Municipalities, Joint Revisions, and Taxation.
