Scope and Content Note: In 1971 Sanders was appointed writer-producer for ABC's News-Documentary section, for which she wrote and produced the controversial Population: Boom or Doom? (January 6, 1973). Its explicit commentary on abortion and sex education was offensive to members of the Nixon administration, Catholic and other religious groups, and several other pressure groups. Materials relating to Population: Boom or Doom? include correspondence, budget material, and production records, including scripts, transcripts, research materials, and reviews. Arrangement is chronological within these files, which offer a complete picture of how this documentary was researched and filmed, how pressure groups and television critics reacted to it both before and after its showing, and how Sanders and her staff worked to present information on a very emotional issue. Particularly interesting are the statements in the correspondence about the controversy surrounding the production, and in the transcripts are interviews with persons such as John D. Rockefeller III, Oregon's Senator Bob Packwood, and staff and patients at an abortion clinic. The collection also includes audiotapes of interviews related to her book Waiting for Prime Time, discussions on religion and intellectual freedom, and Sanders' lecture on reporting that she gave to her New York University class in 1968. Other subjects documented include Sanders' coverage of John F. Kennedy's funeral and Robert F. Kennedy's assassination.
