Dorothy Laverne Meredith Papers, 1925-1980

Biography/History

Dorothy Meredith was born November 17, 1906 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She attended the Layton School of Art, Milwaukee and the Wisconsin State Teachers College at Milwaukee. Meredith received recognition for her watercolor paintings and later moved into fiber art where she received international recognition. She was a professor of weaving at UWM between 1953 and 1975. In 1975, she retired with the status of professor emeritus. She was listed in Who's Who in American Art, Famous American Women, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in America. In 1962, Meredith received the Nippon Gendai Kogi Bijutsu Award for her work in fiber art. She also became a fellow to the American Crafts Council in 1958 and received emeritus fellow status in 1980.
