U.S. Mss 64AF

Part 1 (U.S. Mss 64AF, Audio 308A, Audio 385A, Audio 389A, Audio 440A, Audio
495A, Audio 749A, Disc 149A, PH 3756, VBA 908-VBA 920, M87-158): Original Collection,
1948-198580.2 cubic feet (38 records center cartons, 81 archives boxes, and 25 flat
boxes), 45 tape recordings, 0.1 cubic feet of photographs (4 folders), 4 disc
recordings, 23 films, and 13 videorecordings; plus additions of 3 tape recordings and 6
disc recordings The records consist of entries in the PRSA's annual Silver Anvil Awards competition,
1954-1985, together with a small group of the organization's own records. SILVER ANVIL
COMPETITION files consist of both winning and losing entries. With a few exceptions,
winning entries are complete. The losers concentrate in the period 1956-1967 and 1971.
These selected holdings do appear fragmentary, but are meant to complement existing
collections in labor history, mass communications, and other areas of concern to the
Society. The winning entries and the 1971 non-winners are filed alphabetically within
each year; selected non-winners, 1956-1967, are arranged as a single unit and filed at
the end of the 1967 winners. Films included with entries are listed separately at the
end of Part 1. Each entry varies in depth, in the manner in which it documents its particular public
relations program, and in the types of material included. Present may be press releases,
photographs, clippings, recordings, and promotional kits. The subjects treated are so
varied as to prevent full discussion here. In general, however, the submissions
represent public relations activities in business and industry, government, the
military, and social welfare organizations. Subjects of the entries range from the
parochial and frivolous to a growing reflection of national concerns such as race
relations, ecology, the energy crisis, and the Vietnam Conflict. PRSA RECORDS include several scrapbooks about the organization's activities, 1949-1960,
and a selection of material relating to various professional seminars, institutes, and
national conferences. With the exception of the planning files for the institutes at the
University of Wisconsin, these files consist chiefly of transcripts or recordings of
speeches. Also of interest in the miscellaneous records is a taped briefing session
delivered to PRSA by the Defense Department in 1962 on the duties of the department and
the necessity for a well-informed public.
