UW-Milwaukee Dept. of Architecture Records, 1980-2008

Biography/History

The department began as the School of Architecture on July 1, 1968. The School of Architecture prided itself on its innovation and community service and had the support of the American Institute of Architecture as well as several Wisconsin state architectural institutions ( An Institutional Profile of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee , 1969, p. 19). Within the next decade the school had established a master's program and had moved onto the main UWM campus. In 1974, the Department of Urban Planning was established and combined with the School of Architecture to create the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP). Simultaneously, UWM's Faculty Senate voted to create a new Department of Architecture within SARUP, from which the records in this collection originate.

SARUP currently consists of two major departments: the Department of Architecture--which provides a bachelor's degree, master's degree, and a doctoral degree--and the Department of Urban Planning--which provides a master's degree. The school also offers a coordinated master's degree in Architecture and Urban Planning. In 2013, the Department of Architecture received approval for a second master's degree, an M.S. in Architecture.
