U.S. Mss 27AN
|
Part 1 (U.S. Mss 27AN, Audio 505A/1-32, 39-78): Original Collection, 1929-196946.4 cubic feet (72 archives boxes,
59 volumes, and 2 packages), 54 audio recordings (1/4-inch reel), 2 audio recordings
(cassette), 16 audio recordings (disc) The Original Collection comprises everything received in the Archives through 1969. Its
contents date 1929-1969 and primarily document the Kerrs' early lives and the wide range
of personal and professional interests of these two writers. This part of the collection
is divided into several series: General Correspondence; Personal and Miscellaneous
Papers; Financial and Legal Correspondence; Theater; Criticism; Lectures; Television;
Jean Kerr's Book and Articles; Miscellaneous; and Recordings. Generally, the material
within each series is organized chronologically; the one exception is the television
series, which has been arranged alphabetically by program title. GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE (Boxes 1-22) spans the years 1929 to 1969 and is arranged
chronologically. (Correspondence that relates to a particular play or book has been
placed with that specific title.) Often, especially in the later correspondence, carbon
copies of letters sent by the Kerrs are present, as well as letters received by them.
Researchers will find both quantity and diversity in this series: there are lecture
requests, fan mail, family correspondence, and letters from professional associates from
the Kerrs. There are letters from many notable correspondents. PERSONAL AND MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS (Boxes 22-26) consists of passports, college notes,
awards, photographs, and appointment books. FINANCIAL AND LEGAL CORRESPONDENCE (Boxes 26 and 27) contains contracts, bank
statements, financial statements. Included are reports from Brandt and Brandt, Collins
Productions, the Kerrs' publishers, and World Theater. The series THEATER (Boxes 28-40 and Volumes 1-25) is divided into three categories,
according to the location of the Kerrs' productions: the early plays, 1932-1939, of the
Kerrs' high school and college years; the plays produced at Catholic University,
1939-1948; and New York and other later productions, 1942-1964. In the last category are
included the plays first produced at Catholic University and then taken to New York. Materials for individual plays vary and may consist of correspondence, scripts,
musical scores, contracts, photographs, playbills, production notes, clippings, and
financial papers. Undated plays are listed alphabetically by title at the end of the
early plays. Included among the play manuscripts are Sing Out Sweet Land, King of Hearts, Goldilocks, Mary, Mary, and
Poor Richard. Within the series CRITICISM (Boxes 40-64, and Volumes 26-30) is the
documentation--correspondence, notes, contracts, drafts and revisions, financial
statements, galley proofs--of this most incisive part of Walter Kerr's career. The
series begins with Kerr's books: Staging the
Great Plays, How Not to Write a
Play, Criticism and
Censorship, Pieces at Eight,
The Decline of Pleasure, Tragedy and Comedy, and Thirty Plays Hath November. Also included
here are books for which Kerr wrote an essay or an introduction. Following the books are
articles written for journals. Of interest to most researchers will be the play reviews
written for Commonweal, the New York Herald Tribune, and the New York Times; these begin in Box 56,
Folder 7 and continue through Box 64, Folder 2, and are bound in Volumes 29 and 30. LECTURES (Boxes 65 and 66) contain the notes Kerr used while a professor at Catholic
University, as well as his research files and notes used for lectures given throughout
the country. The final series that deals with Walter Kerr's career is TELEVISION (Boxes 67 and 68
and Volumes 31-33). These materials, primarily scripts, are organized alphabetically by
series title. Scripts for individual episodes within the series are arranged
chronologically; undated and unidentified scripts are placed at the end of this series.
Included here are scripts and comments for Profiles in Courage and Omnibus, for which Kerr served as drama consultant. Boxes 68 and 69 contain JEAN KERR'S BOOK AND ARTICLES; these drafts are arranged
chronologically. For Please Don't Eat the
Daisies, only correspondence and financial and legal information are
available. The Snake Has All the Lines
and Penny Candy are collections of
articles. Miscellaneous articles by Mrs. Kerr are at the end of this series. MISCELLANEOUS (Boxes 70-72 and Volumes 34-59) consists of books sent to the Kerrs,
high school and college publications, scrapbooks, and photographs. Also here is a
manuscript of special interest--a stenographic recording of private sessions with the
Group Theater, 1939; this transcript was given to Walter Kerr. A small group of
interviews with the Kerrs is also included here. AUDIO RECORDINGS consists of 16 tape recordings and 16 disc recordings that
supplement the musical scores, interviews, and discussions provided earlier in the
collection.

Part 2 (U.S. Mss 27AN, Audio 505A/39-78, Audio 1052A): 1984
Additions, circa 1920, 1927,
1934-197910.0 cubic feet (39 archives boxes
and 9 volumes) and 1 audio recording (cassette) Part 2 is designated the 1984 Additions because they were organized in the Archives in
that year. They consist of papers received in the Archives in the 1970s. Most materials
in the 1984 Additions date from the late 1960s and 1970s, although the bulk of Jean
Kerr's letters to her parents cover the 1940s and 1950s. The additions are divided into
six series. The three major series are papers of Jean Kerr, papers of Walter Kerr, and
papers of both Jean and Walter Kerr. The fourth series contains papers of the Kerr
children, the fifth those of Jean Kerr's parents, and the sixth consists of
correspondence files from the Kerrs' agents, Brandt and Brandt. The PAPERS OF JEAN KERR begin with correspondence files. The section "Miscellaneous
Correspondence" includes many letters from actor Walter Slezak. Letters written by Mrs.
Kerr to her parents, Kitty and Thomas Collins, provide detailed information on the early
years of the Kerrs' marriage, their activities at Catholic University, their involvement
with the Broadway stage, their association with prominent people in the theater world,
and the raising of their children. The section "Theater" includes manuscripts of Mrs.
Kerr's play Finishing Touches, as well
as fan mail and correspondence concerning this and an earlier play, Mary, Mary. The section "Books" contains
manuscripts from How I Got to be
Perfect, Penny Candy, and
Please Don't Eat the Daisies. Also
included in this section is correspondence related to Mrs. Kerr's books. The section
"Short Pieces" includes manuscripts and correspondence related to Jean Kerr's articles.
The "Royalty Statements" are arranged alphabetically by the name of the work to which
they pertain. The PAPERS OF WALTER KERR start with correspondence files. These files are further
categorized as follows: "Miscellaneous Correspondence" contains letters from a wide
variety of correspondents, including prominent public personages and major figures of
the theater world; "Correspondence with Specific Persons," includes letters from film
buff Spencer Berger, fellow columnist Joseph Cantinella, and Roderick Bladel, who wrote
a dissertation analyzing Mr. Kerr's criticism; "Correspondence with Publishers,
Organizations, and other Business Firms"; "Correspondence regarding Awards," which
concerns awards given to others, not to Mr. Kerr himself; and "Correspondence regarding
Films," which documents Mr. Kerr's long-time interest in motion pictures, but does not
contain materials related specifically to his book on silent films, The Silent Clowns; those are found under
that title in the section "Books," described below. The section "New York Times
Materials" begins with first drafts of the pieces that eventually appeared in the paper.
These are followed by correspondence and memos from the Times staff, then by correspondence concerning Mr. Kerr's
columns. Included in this last category are letters from actors, playwrights, and
directors whose work came under scrutiny in Mr. Kerr's pieces. The section "Theater"
includes correspondence about Mr. Kerr's adaptation of The Birds and about his 1944 musical Sing Out Sweet Land. Here can be found a revised version of
this musical. Correspondence concerning five of Mr. Kerr's books is included in the
section "Books," along with manuscripts from three of them -- God on the Gymnasium Floor, Journey to the Center of the Theater, and The Silent Clowns. Included in the section
"Radio and Film" are scripts and transcripts for the cassette recordings made by Mr.
Kerr in the early 1970s. The actual recordings are not in the collection. In the section
"Lectures," along with correspondence and notes for the presentations is a cassette
recording of a lecture given by Walter Kerr at New York's Orange County Community
College in March 1976. In this lecture, he discussed his own work and the state of the
contemporary theater in the United States. Royalty statements for most of Mr. Kerr's
works are arranged alphabetically by title. The PAPERS OF JEAN AND WALTER KERR are divided into four sections.
"Correspondence" contains letters to and from the Kerrs' relatives and friends,
including many letters from actor Walter Slezak. "Theater" includes correspondence about
the Kerrs' musical Goldilocks and a
song score from Touch and Go. "Awards"
includes correspondence and congratulations for the Laetare medal. Finally, "Miscellany"
includes royalty statements for the collaborative works of Mr. and Mrs. Kerr. The Kerrs'
scrapbooks document their multifarious activities from 1963 to 1977. They contain
clippings, playbills, theater programs, and other ephemera. PAPERS OF THE KERR CHILDREN contain, for the most part, letters written by the
children to their parents and grandparents. PAPERS OF KITTY AND THOMAS COLLINS, Jean Kerr's parents, include letters written by
Mrs. Collins to her daughter Jean. They also contain letters written to the Collinses by
their other children, Frank, Hugh, and Eileen, as well as correspondence with other
relatives and friends. The last series in the collection consists of BRANDT AND BRANDT CORRESPONDENCE FILES, the Kerrs'
agents since the 1950s. These files contain both ingoing and outgoing correspondence
with the Kerrs themselves, and with people involved with the Kerrs' work. Most of the
letters in this series are copies. All materials in the additions are arranged chronologically within folders, unless
otherwise specified. Incoming and outgoing letters are filed together, except in the
correspondence of Jean Kerr with her parents. An incoming letter will often be attached
to its reply, and both are filed according to the date of reply.

Part 3 (M2004-120, Audio 505A/33-38): Additions, 1933-1993 8.3 cubic feet (7 record center
cartons and 2 flat boxes), 6 audio recordings (cassette), and 36 photographs : Additions, 1933-1993 (bulk late 1970s-early 1990s) consisting of general correspondence
including letters and cards from family and friends, scrapbooks containing news
clippings and other ephemera related to their careers, and a set of their appointment
books listing their daily events and engagements. Papers specific to Walter include
typed drafts, often annotated, of his critical pieces for theatrical shows written for
the New York Times. Other writings include drafts and
revised versions of his articles for publications, notes and manuscripts for books and
reviews, and his personal correspondence including letters written to Jean dating to the
early 1940s. Jean's papers include her letters to Walter, drafts of her play Lunch Hour (originally titled Jill Came
Tumbling After) and other miscellaneous productions, and articles she wrote
for various magazines in the 1980s. Also included are photographs, mostly of Walter,
used for publicity for his books and articles, photographs of the casts and stage
settings of Jean's plays, and photographs of friends. Housed with the photographs is an
autographed copy of the April 14, 1961 Time Magazine
cover featuring Jean Kerr.
