The UWM Center for Urban Transportation Studies is an interdisciplinary group of faculty
and students who share a common interest in the various aspects of transportation. Among the
issues studied at the center are urban mass transit, transportation management, land use,
travel forecasting, alternative futures, technology transfer, private sector involvement in
transportation, ride sharing, energy constraints on transportation, port operation and
planning, railroad operations, environmental impacts, community impacts, and transportation
planning. The center first became an independent entity in July 1976. It was created out of
an initiative in the School of Engineering in order to conduct and facilitate
interdisciplinary research by students and faculty in the topic of urban transportation.
Various academic units have been involved with the center over time, including the
Department of Civil Engineering & Mechanics, the Department of Industrial &
Manufacturing Engineering, the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, the School of
Business Administration, and University Extension.
