Edward Tomlinson Papers, 1911-1972

Scope and Content Note

The papers of Edward Tomlinson span his entire writing and broadcasting career. Though never complete, the documentation is best for the 1930s onward. The papers are divided into three series: general, writings, and radio scripts.

The GENERAL series contains biographical information and correspondence (including letters dated June 5, 1942, June 20, 1947, and October 4, 1949, from Cordell Hull, and one on June 9, 1959, from Mike Mansfield). Also included here are speeches, reviews of Look Southward, Uncle, notes, and newsclippings, articles, and miscellany which document the activities of Edward Tomlinson. Especially important are the typed notes of confidential conversations about the establishment of a civilian government to replace the post-Peron military regime of Argentina, 1957.

The WRITINGS series contains some of Tomlinson's articles in published form; most, however, are represented by drafts. There are suggestions for a book, as well as numerous articles, which he sent to editors and publishers. In addition, there is an incomplete, though fairly extensive, file of Tomlinson's news releases on Latin American events from the late 1940s to 1959. Most of these were syndicated through the George Matthew Adams News Service.

The RADIO SCRIPTS series has a significant number of scripts used by Tomlinson in broadcasts over NBC. Most are for his The Other Americas program and weekly news commentary during the 1930s and 1940s. Other notable scripts concern inter-American conferences, 1933-1942; Tomlinson's presentation on America's Town Meeting of the Air, circa 1938; his 1938 program on the relation of the United States to the world economy, Paths to Prosperity; and commentary on the Cuban revolution for Three Star Extra, 1960-1961. A few program outlines drafted by Tomlinson are filed with scripts for The Other Americas and with the undated and fragmentary scripts.

The VISUAL MATERIALS series contains photographs of Edward Tomlinson, his career, and his association with prominent cultural and political leaders in his role as an authority on Latin-American affairs. Also includes photographs of Tomlinson touring a Venezuelan Catholic School in an impoverished city neighborhood, circa 1965, touring classroom facilities, domestics classes, dormitory, infirmary, and neighborhood.
