The collection consists primarily of documentation of the operation of various research
centers, programs, and Centers of Excellence under the jurisdiction of the Office of
Research and Sponsored Programs between 1972-1994. These centers, which were established at
various times during the period covered by this collection, both provide grant money for
member faculty and other researchers and help mediate those researchers' applications for
outside funding through Research and Sponsored programs. Centers and programs represented in
the collection include:
- Center for 21st Century Studies
- Center for Great Lakes Studies
- Center for Latin American Studies
- Center for Women's Studies
- Extramural Support Information Center
- Institute on Race and Ethnicity
- JASON Project
- Laboratory for Surface Studies
- Urban Research Center
The files mostly contain information on the establishment of the centers to which they
pertain, planning documents, correspondence, yearly budgets, grant award letters, grant
application forms, committee meetings, and information on staffing at both the professional
and graduate assistant level. The documentation is particularly rich for the Center for
Great Lakes Studies, and includes information, reports, and informal design schematics for
the center's 1986-1987 facility remodelling. Also covered at length in the records are the
activities of the Extramural Support Information Center, including workshop agendas and
monthly information packets about the center's activities, and the activities of the JASON
Project, including planning documents and information on special programs. Gifts, Grants, and
Contracts Accepted by the Board of Regents, dating from 1964 to 1995, are also included in
the collection.
