In 1964, the Department of Campus Protection was formed with the primary functions of
protecting life and property against criminal attack, and the preservation of peace. The
first university law enforcement officer was appointed in 1965 and oversaw an operational
force of six watchmen. In 1973 the department changed its name to the University Police
Department. The University Police exists to provide essential law enforcement, emergency and
protective services to university students, staff, faculty and visitors.
