F. Darius Benham Papers, 1915-1960

Scope and Content Note

The collection includes one folder of correspondence, 1915, September 7 - 1957, October 28, of a very miscellaneous nature, covering a variety of subjects from Mr. Benham's service in France to negotiations for permission to film the life of Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. Many of the letters are from prominent people. Among those whose signatures appear are: Alben. W. Barkley, Richard E. Byrd, Claire L. Chennault, Elmer Davis, Jerome “Dizzy” Dean, “Jimmy” Doolittle, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jim Farley, Roy Howard, Martin Johnson, Henry Luce, J. P. Morgan, Eddie Rickenbacker, Archibald Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., Edward R. Stettinius, Jr., Robert A. Taft, and Bill Veeck.

There is also a small folder of typescript articles about Mr. Benham, all written in a sensational journalistic manner, emphasizing the more bizarre aspects of his life.

In addition, there is a folder of printed matter, 1923 - 1960, January 25, primarily concerned with organizations founded by Mr. Benham. Among them are: the Seraphic Secretaries, the Circus Saints and Sinners, and the Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., American Legion Post. There is also material concerning the book, Fabulous Freddie and the Saints and Sinners, written by Paul D. Green, and the death of Mr. Benham in a fire in his home.
