Created in 1963 under the name of Planning and Development, responsibilities (and those of
its successors) included overseeing the design, construction, and remodeling of buildings on
the UWM campus. In 1974, the name changed to Physical Planning and Construction. In 1978,
the department became Design Services within the Facilities Department; the director was in
charge of both operations. In 1982, the Facilities Department separated into two
departments: Physical Plant, and Planning and Construction. Under this reorganization, the
position of director of planning and construction was recreated. In 1995, the name changed
to Campus Facilities Planning. In January 2016, the name was changed to Facilities Planning
and Management.
