Biography/History

Herbert S. Williams, born in 1905, grew up in and received a grammar school education in Nashville, Tennessee, and has spent the major portion of his life there. He worked for fourteen years in the printing trade and went on the staff of the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants Union of North America in 1936. In 1937 he was hired by the Textile Workers Organizing Committee (TWOC) as an organizer in Tennessee and at the end of that year became TWOC's Alabama State Director. From that time until his retirement in 1964, Williams served as director for various southern states and regions for the Textile Workers Union of America (TWUA), spending most of his time in Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina. He served on the TWUA Executive Council from 1941-1964.
