Oral History Interview with B. L. Blochowiak, 1977-1978

Biography/History

Bruno L. (Bob) Blochowiak was born in Milwaukee on September 25, 1906. After completing elementary and secondary education in parochial and public schools on Milwaukee's south side, in 1931 he enrolled in the dairy short course at the College of Agriculture, University of Wisconsin-Madison. With the knowledge acquired during the course, Blochowiak returned to Milwaukee to improve the facilities at the Blochowiak Dairy Company, founded in 1905 by his father, John, three years after his migration from German-occupied Poland. John Blochowiak, with the help of his children, developed a very successful business on Milwaukee's heavily immigrant, working class south side, marketing “Bright Star” brand dairy products.

From an early age, Bob Blochowiak joined his siblings in doing such tasks as preparing bottles for the washing machine, attending to the horses used to pull home-delivery wagons, and driving and maintaining home-delivery trucks after the horses began to be replaced. On April 29, 1972, the last day of operation for the Blochowiak Dairy Company, Bob Blochowiak--president of the dairy since 1943--was among the best-known and widely-respected Polish-American businessmen in the city of Milwaukee.
