Scope and Content Note

General records of the Town of Hutchins, primarily late 19th century and early 20th century. Records consist of Clerk's General Record books, 1879-1906, and cover most aspects of town business including proceedings of the annual town meetings and regular meetings of the town board, register of oaths of town officers, apportionment of school funds, financial reports of the town board, orders drawn with the treasurer, and school district boundary maps.

An assessment tax roll, 1898, shows property (real and personal) descriptions, assessed valuations, ownership, and taxes assessed on each piece of property. General Election Records, 1886-1898, lists names of eligible voters in the town for 1886, and voting results for the election of county and state offices, 1890 and 1898.

The town highway record, 1886-1898, contains information regarding the town highway system, including highway overseers and their dates of office, proceedings of the highway overseers meetings (titled “proceedings of the town board”), applications for the laying-out of highway lanes, boundaries of road districts, supervisor's road warrants and highway tax lists, persons taxed for highway property and the amount taxed. Finally, the Town Highway record includes some district road maps.

A ledger, 1911-1938, lists money received and disbursed. Most entries concern road funds and include but are not limited to fire, delinquent, and poor funds.

The chattel mortgage record, 1906-1929, lists mortgages held and redeemed. Entries are arranged alphabetically by last name of mortgagor and give the name of the mortgagee, amount, date mortgage taken, the due date and if the mortgage was paid or cancelled.
