The City of Sheboygan’s Public assistance case files are composed of two distinct subseries. While the type of content present in each of these groupings is generally identical, the access restrictions imposed on either of them differs greatly.
Boxes 1-22 contain case files from individuals whose current status is unconfirmed. While it is possible that these case files were created before 1945, or that they pertain to individuals who are now deceased, this has yet to be confirmed. Providing access to these case files must be made in accordance with S. 49.83, Wis. Stats., as outlined in the restriction notice placed on this collection.
Boxes 23-29 contain case files from individuals confirmed by the City of Sheboygan to be deceased, during the city’s attempt to recoup welfare payments. As such, these records are open for research, except in such cases where the records reference adoptions or children in foster care.
