The building, maintenance, and purchased equipment for these facilities was part of Works Progress Administration (later renamed the Work Project Administration) and/or Civil Works Administration (CWA) projects; agencies that functioned under the New Deal to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads.
