The Reading Clinic began operation in 1952 as part of the Wisconsin State College,
Milwaukee. It was established to serve three purposes: 1) to conduct research on various
reading-learning problems; 2) to provide opportunity for classroom teachers and reading
specialists to improve their teaching of reading and to become certified to teach reading;
and 3) to provide diagnosis and treatment for those pupils admitted to the program.
In 1956, following the merger of the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee and the University
of Wisconsin's Milwaukee Center, the clinic became part of the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Arthur W. Schoeller was director of the clinic from its founding until
1972. In 1972 the clinic was renamed the Reading Center. It is currently administered by the
Department of Curriculum and Instruction, School of Education.
