Cases documented include the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression v. Election Board, challenging a Wisconsin constitutional amendment that was voted on during the April 1981 election. The amendment stated that people accused of violent crimes could be denied bail. The Elections Board v. Walter L. Ward, Jr. and Friends of Ward related to a charge of violating elections laws related to campaign finances.

The case best documented is the 1981 State ex rel. The Committee to Recall Senator Harnisch v. Elections Board, Thomas Harnisch and the State Democratic Committee, State of Wisconsin, involving an attempted recall of State Senator Thomas Harnisch.

Scope and Content Note: Legal cases, 1994-1998, of cases before the State Elections Board, related to the Finance Services Committee regarding recalls and election irregularities. Included are legal opinions, orders, supporting documents and exhibits, ballot counts, verified complaints, correspondence, petitions, affidavits, transcripts and court decisions. They arranged by the Election Board's case number. Some cases were consolidated for final decision and order. Of greatest interest is a series of cases concerning the Wisconsin Association of Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC) Issues Mobilization Council regarding a series of TV and radio ads discussing voting records of elected officials. The case eventually went to the Supreme Court, which upheld the Council's right to the ads. The case is viewed as a landmark in corporate free speech.
