Part 26 (2011/150): Additions, 1939-1998 25.5 cubic feet (20 records center cartons, 7 archives boxes, 1 oversize folder, and 7 tubes) : Files, 1939-1998, related to the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin v. State of Wisconsin (case 95-C-0030C), a case in Western District Court, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court, and the U.S. Supreme Court related to off-reservation treaty rights. At issue was the claim of the Menominee Tribe to off-reservation hunting and fishing rights, and the Tribe's claim to rights on portions of Lake Michigan, Green Bay, Lake Winnebago, and a segment of the Wisconsin River. The records document both the original case and the appeal to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court; there is a small amount of material related to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision. There are court documents including briefs, motions, pleadings, and opinions. There is a large quantity of photocopied historical documents gathered as part of the discovery and research process. Of note in the discovery files are several interviews with Menominee Tribe members. Research files contain original reports by expert witnesses, information on other related cases including Mille Lacs Band of Chippewa Indians v. State of Minnesota, treaty research, and Menominee culture and heritage research. Also included are a variety of maps outlining reservation boundaries and natural areas in Wisconsin. : Several folders in this collection are restricted due to attorney-client privilege (Wis. Stats. 905.03), Box 9, Folder 35; Box 11, Folder 9; Box 12, Folders 2-7 and 33. Researchers wishing to use these portions of the collection should consult the reference archivist.

Series: Discovery : Photocopied documents collected from various sources, mainly the National Archives, folder labels include the reel and frame numbers of documents, and some other information on a source's location. Documents are in chronological groupings, but years are often repeated. It is unknown which portion of the case these documents were used in. The bulk of the documents are from the National Archives series: Annual Report of the Commissioner of the Office of Indian Affairs (ARCOIA), Letters sent by the Office of Indian Affairs, and Letters received by the Office of Indian Affairs. Box 7 contains some articles from the Shawano County Advocate and Shawano Evening Leader.

Series: ResearchThe bulk of this series are photocopied historical documents arranged by a barcode affixed to the document. The source of most of these documents is unknown, however many likely came from the National Archives. Aside from three boxes related to the Lac Courte Oreilles, documents have an unknown order. Witness reports include original cultural, treaty, and historical research on the Menominee. There is also a great deal of research pertaining to the Mille Lacs case. Also noteworthy are treaty files that contain related historical documents.
