The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Department of Geology formally began in the fall of
1962. The proposal and establishment of the department's curriculum and faculty began in
1957. On September 17, 1969, the name Department of Geology was changed to the Department of
Geological Sciences. In May 1981, it was changed again to the Department of Geological and
Geophysical Sciences. In 1988, it was changed to the Department of Geosciences.
