Historical Profile, 1885-1992 (Milwaukee: UWM Foundation, Inc., 1992).
A graduate program in social work for the Milwaukee area was begun during the 1946-1947
academic year under the direction of Willard Downing. The University of Wisconsin-Extension
offered courses, which were administered through the School of Social Work of the University
of Wisconsin in Madison. In the 1950's, undergraduate courses in social work were offered at
the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee. In 1956, when the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
(UWM) was established, the Department of Social Work was created, and administered within
the College of Letters & Science. In April 1963, the School of Social Work was
established, headed by a director, and remained part of the College of Letters &
Science. The School of Social Welfare was created in July 1965, headed by a dean, and was
made independent of the college.
In 2001, the school changed its name from the UW-Milwaukee School of Social Welfare to the
Helen Bader School of Social Welfare.
