State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Historic Preservation Division: Unpublished Archaeology Reports, 1970-2008

Scope and Content Note

This collection is part of the Wisconsin Bibliography of Archaeological Reports database (BAR). The Wisconsin BAR database is a source of summary information on Section 106 compliance archaeological projects, Survey and Planning Archaeological Sub-grant reports, and reports submitted under the auspices of the Wisconsin Regional Archaeology Program. Although in theory all compliance reports, all S & P reports, and all Regional Archaeology reports are included in the database, in reality there are a number of gaps in the inventory, particularly for reports written before 1992. United States Forest Service Cultural Resource Reconnaissance Report forms were entered inconsistently prior to 1984. Wisconsin Department of Transportation Archaeological Survey Field Reports were entered inconsistently between 1981 and 1987. Archaeological Survey Information Transmittals for borrow pit surveys have not been entered into the BAR database since 1992. Borrow pit surveys were ended in 1995. These missing reports are being entered as time and staffing permit.

Please note that all reports are keyed first to a WHS/SHSW case number (e.g. 00-1234), and secondly to a BAR number assigned by the computer program (e.g. BAR # 5678). Since there may be (and often are) multiple reports generated for the same project, there may be multiple BAR entries and BAR numbers for the same WHS/SHSW case number.

A summary box list is included in this finding aid and is found below. However the Bibliography of Archaeological Reports (BAR) is a database of sites and serves as the primary finding aid to this series; the database and other related materials are available at the Historical Society in the office of the State Archaeologist under conditions set by statute.
