The Ethnic Studies Program grew out of the Ethnic Studies Coordinating Committee formed by
Victor Greene in 1972-1973. In October 1973, the name of the committee changed to the Ethnic
Studies Advisory Committee. From 1973-1977, the College of Letters & Science offered
the ethnic studies program as an interdepartmental course of study. A task force to draft
the proposal for an ethnic studies major met in 1974-1975. In March 1975, the Faculty Senate
approved the request for the ethnic studies major. From 1977 to 1986, the ethnic studies
curriculum was available to UWM students as a special major. In 1985 ethnic studies was
listed as a major in the University Bulletin but without a
coordinator, and in 1986 the program was ended. Since 1987 ethnic studies has been offered
as a certificate program in the College of Letters & Science.
