In 1960 the University of Wisconsin regents accepted a grant from the Johnson Foundation to
establish an Institute for World Affairs Education for the purpose of educating students,
faculty and the community in the field of world affairs. The Institute changed its name to
its current form in the mid-1960s. Originally a part of the University of Wisconsin
Extension, the Institute was transferred to the Division of Urban Outreach of the University
of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1974.
