Biography/History

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was created in 1956 following the merger of the University of Wisconsin's Milwaukee Center and the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee. Prior to the merger, Neil Billings was appointed director of the Division of Elementary Education for the Milwaukee State Teachers College in 1949; he served as director of the department until 1960. In September 1960, Gerald Gleason assumed the position of chair.
