Biography/History
In 1957, UWM and the UW-Extension discussed ideas for an agency to serve the needs of the
Milwaukee metropolitan area. Out of this idea grew the Bureau of Government in 1958. The
name was changed to the Institute of Governmental Affairs in 1964. The name changed again in
1977 to the Department of Governmental Affairs.
