The position of vice provost was established in May 1956 with the founding of UW-Milwaukee.
The vice provost originally had special responsibilities for business affairs and evening
instruction. Following Vice Provost Parkinson's resignation in July 1958, the position
remained unfilled for five years. The position was reoccupied in 1963, with an emphasis on
overall control of academic affairs. On January 8, 1965, the title of vice provost was
changed to vice chancellor. In 1993, the title was changed to provost and vice chancellor
for academic affairs.
