Biography/History

In 1963, the federal government contracted with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to establish a training center for volunteers to staff as many as six projects a year. In September 1964, UWM and the Peace Corps launched an expanded cooperative program that included research, overseas project development, supervision by faculty specialists and the development of undergraduate and graduate programs to prepare American for overseas service. The contract was extended through until 1968. UWM was designated as one of three year-round Peace Corps Training Centers in the United States. The UWM Peace Corps Training Center initially had an office at the downtown campus with some subjects taught on the Kenwood campus. The headquarters later moved to the Kenwood campus. The Center closed in 1970. The Peace Corps Training Center was sometimes called the Peace Corps Center.
