UW-Milwaukee School of Education Records, 1928-2011

Scope and Content Note

Records created or compiled by the dean of the School of Education, mostly dating from the 1960s and 1970s. The collection contains a few records from UWM's predecessor institutions.

The majority of the collection consists of files concerning activities and programs within the School of Education and its departments. The records document committee activities; curriculum and program developments; conferences and workshops; staffing, equipment, and space needs; announcements and reports; and the departmental reorganization and plans for the future of the school. Also included are materials regarding accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teach Education (NCATE) and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

The collection contains a large number of community education program files. These files contain materials covering the development of a degree program in community education. Included within these files are department minutes documenting course and curriculum developments, staffing, committee reports, and other department announcements. The files also contain materials regarding the adult and adolescent education programs. Among miscellaneous other files is a report on the Action Planning Center, an instructional and research unit within the community education program developed to help students learn community change skills as part of the undergraduate degree in community education.

The collection also contains files on the Community Resources Workshop designed to give participants greater knowledge and deeper understanding of life in the Milwaukee area by focusing attention on the community's social and economic resources. Found within these files are brochures, correspondence, newsletters, and reports detailing workshop planning, funding support, speaker information, and events and activities.

The correspondence files contain primarily deans' correspondence concerning funding, staffing, space needs, program developments, and other administrative matters. The bulk of the correspondence was generated by Deans George W. Denemark and Richard H. Davis. Some correspondence of department faculty and associate deans is also found in these files.

Files from the Cultural Foundations of Education Department include minutes which contain announcements, document course and curriculum developments, staffing and space needs, faculty activities, and other departmental concerns.

Early Childhood Center files contain proposals for establishing a day-care center and reports of present and future programs. Also found in the collection are papers supporting the development of a day-care training program and proposals for financial support of the center. Several proposals for the formation of the Early Childhood Department as well as minutes of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction's Early Childhood Education Committee are included in the collection.
