Biography/History

Students to Oppose Pollution was a summer intern program commencing in June 1970, sponsored by the Attorney General's office. Twenty-two law and environmental science students were hired for the program to investigate and document pollution-related complaints received from citizens throughout the state. The investigators' function was to gather information to be evaluated by the Department of Justice for possible prosecution by the attorneys assigned to pollution cases. The majority of the STOP investigations were conducted during the summer of 1970, but a limited number of students were retained into the fall and spring of the following year.
