Wisconsin. Governor's Commission on Human Rights: Records, 1934, 1945-1971

Scope and Content Note

The Records of the Governor's Commission on Human Rights consist of seven series, 996-1002. The materials in these series were taken from accessions that arrived at the Society between 1966 and 1977. The original accessions consisted of immense quantities of materials in a very chaotic state. There was much duplication and a great deal of bulk that was discarded or transferred elsewhere. Because of the disorganized nature of the original accessions, organization often had to be imposed on the materials that remained.

The records are organized into seven series:

  • Series 996: Minutes and Related Materials, 1945-1965.
  • Series 997: General Correspondence and Subject File, 1934, 1945-1971, containing reports, summaries, correspondence, complaints, conference materials, memos, legislative documentation, questionnaires, and other materials, with information on Commission committees, complaints and cases, conferences, housing, Native Americans, legislation, local commissions, migrants, resorts, youth, the Ku Klux Klan, and other topics.
  • Series 998: Newspaper Clipping Scrapbooks and Reprints, 1945-1967.
  • Series 999: Publications and Public Statements, 1946-1967.
  • Series 1000: Films, 1954 [1950s].
  • Series 1001: Tape Recordings, 1952-1963.
  • Series 1002: Broadcasts: Disc Recordings, 1951-1955, undated.
