UW-Milwaukee Student Association Records, 1921-2019

Scope and Content Note

Miscellaneous records of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) Student Association and its predecessors, the Commonwealth and the University Student Government. The majority of the collection consists of minutes, correspondence, reports, bills, and legislation of the student government and its committees, including the Student Senate, the Executive Committee, the Senate Appropriations Committee (SAC), and the Segregated Fee Allocation Committee (SFAC). Also included are records of the Union Policy Board, which sets policy for the Student Union, a funding appeal from the Wisconsin Student Public Interest Group, and reports to the Student Association.

The collection also includes records from the University Student Court, which serves as the judicial branch of the Student Association. Most of these records are briefs and reports from the various cases heard by the student court between 1966-2008. Some of the case files in this series also include evidentiary material deemed vital to an understanding of the case. A few files in this series deal with general issues that come before the court regularly, such as election disputes and funding.

Also included is the 2014 constitution of the UWM Student Association, approved via student referendum and signed by the Chancellor and Student Association Reform Task Force on January 30, 2014. The constitution is the result of an 8-month process of reconstituting the Student Association, following fraudulent elections and the dissolution of the Student Association by the Chancellor in Spring 2013.
